Focused Priorities

We position George Mason researchers for success through our enterprise research initiatives, which align their expertise with high‑priority societal challenges and high‑value, real‑world opportunities. These initiatives proactively organize teams, streamline complex proposal development, and elevate visibility with national and international funders, strengthening the university’s ability to turn knowledge into impact.

Programs such as the Grand Challenge Initiative, the Accelerating Research Translation initiative, and the Living Labs ecosystem demonstrate how George Mason mobilizes faculty expertise toward solutions that shape policy, practice, communities, and regional economic growth. Through this university‑level structure, researchers are better able to compete for major awards, join elite interdisciplinary networks, and connect their individual work to institutional priorities that resonate deeply with federal agencies, foundations, industry partners, and other key stakeholders.

George Mason University’s Grand Challenge Initiative (GCI) is a university‑wide research framework designed to mobilize our people, resources, and partnerships around six solution areas where the university can deliver meaningful societal impact.

Supported by an initial five‑year, $15 million investment, the GCI gives researchers a clear structure for building ambitious, interdisciplinary projects and connecting their expertise to institutional priorities.

George Mason designed the GCI as a strategic framework to broaden the university’s research activity and strengthen its ability to pursue opportunities across multiple funding landscapes. With a structure that organizes research strengths, accelerates collaboration, and supports large‑scale project development, the GCI enables the university to advance its research priorities without depending on any single source of external direction.

The initiative ensures the university is prepared when opportunities emerge—and positioned to shape them through multidisciplinary teams, strategic partnerships, and mission‑driven research.

For researchers

The GCI provides a strategic pathway to high‑impact collaboration, visibility with funders, and support for scaling ideas into initiatives. It helps faculty connect their expertise to coordinated teams, large‑scale proposals, and institutional priorities—creating opportunities that rarely emerge within a single department. The GCI also offers structured guidance, project development support, and access to networks that strengthen competitiveness for major awards and accelerate the movement of research toward real‑world application.

For partners and donors

The GCI offers a unified structure that channels investment into coordinated, mission‑driven work with measurable outcomes. It provides a clear view of where the university is concentrating effort, how interdisciplinary teams are organized, and how external support can catalyze solutions with regional and national relevance. The GCI makes it easy for funders to see where their investment will have impact—and ensures that George Mason is ready to deliver it.
